Dr Ewan MacDermid

Dr Ewan MacDermid is a laparoscopic and robotic colorectal surgeon in Sydney with consulting rooms in Penrith and Windsor.
He operates at Nepean Public and Private Hospitals, Westmead Private Hospital and Hawkesbury Hospital. 

Dr Macdermid has special interests in bowel cancer, colonoscopy, haemorrhoids, anal fistulae and anal prolapse.
He also performs general surgical operations including hernia repair, gallbladder surgery, and believes strongly in “whole of patient” care.

As well as expert clinical skills, Dr MacDermid is an award-winning researcher and in 2018 was awarded the Dr Mark Killingback Prize for Colorectal Surgery.

This prize is the highest surgical accolade in Australia for the specialty, awarded annually by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Dr MacDermid obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Aberdeen University in Scotland. He then obtained his Master of Surgery (Colorectal) at the University of Sydney where he was the recipient of the Loewenthal Medal, as well an annual competitive scholarship for Colorectal Surgery.

Ewan completed his general surgery training in Western Sydney, and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2019. He then completed 3 years of training in colorectal surgery, at Royal North Shore, Nepean and Bankstown Hospitals in Sydney.

With a special interest in screening for patients with disabilities and affordable surgeries for privately insured patients, he provides compassionate, timely and affordable care when patients need it most.

Mark Killingback Prize 2018 for research presentation at the Royal College of Surgeons Annual Scientific meeting “The impact of socioeconomic deprivation on stage of presentation of colorectal cancer in a western Sydney population.” Prize consists of stipend towards travel, accommodation and presentation of research at the American Society of Colon and Rectum Surgeons annual meeting in Cleveland, Ohio.
